Ultra-high vacuum

(UHV)

What does UHV stand for?
UHV is the abbreviation of ultra-high vacuum.

What does that exactly mean?
Vacuum is a space void of matter and its quality refers to how closely it approaches the perfect vacuum conditions. The vacuum is divided in quality indicators like low vacuum, medium vacuum, ultra-high vacuum, extremely high vacuum and outer space.

A UHV environment is characterized by pressures lower than 10-8 – 10-12 mbar and it is common in chemistry, physics, and engineering. A UHV environment is very important to scientific research, because experiments often require a chemically clean sample surface with the absence of any unwanted adsorbates.

How is UHV generated?
A UHV condition is created when pumping gas out of a UHV chamber. After that, a UHV chamber can operate below one trillionth (10-12) of atmospheric pressure (1000 mbar) and reach around 100 particles/cm3. The pumping is realized by different types of pumps according to the specific gas load and application.

CreaTec has more than 25 years of experience in design, construction and production of UHV equipment and complete systems. Our products are handled with special cleaning and bake-out procedures in order to enable an UHV excellence in our systems.
